Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is an advanced innovation in skin lesion removal where treatments are fast, effective, very accurate, and safe. As the NHS stopped providing the removal of cosmetic lesions, you can now access removal in our clinic. This treatment safely freezes unwanted skin imperfections such as: skin tags, moles, age spots (seborrheic keratosis), milia, warts, cherry and spider angiomas, verrucae, overactive oil glands (sebaceous hyperplasia) from any area on the body and face.

How does it work?

The device emits a fine jet of Nitrous Oxide under high pressure, which allows us to work with millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the inter cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell.

What should I expect from the treatment?

The applicator is held close to the skin imperfection and the gas is released quickly and accurately onto it. The freeze can last anytime from 1-30 seconds or more depending on the size and depth.

Is it painful?

There will be a stinging sensation similar to a nettle on the skin when the gas reaches the bottom of the lesion being treated, followed by some residual stinging for a few minutes after treatment which is normal. You may even notice some mild itching sensations for up to an hour.

Are there any side effects?

The treated area will swell instantly, followed by a temporary whitening effect similar to a bee sting. Within the first 2 days the area may look red and start to darken creating a scab/crust. This falls off within 2-3 weeks.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically, with small lesions, 1 session is enough, however, with bigger lesions, you may need repeat treatments. Please note, verrucae and wart treatment vary from any other lesion, and we tend to perform up to 3 treatments.

Are the results permanent?

Results are usually permanent. However, in very rare cases you may experience some slight regrowth over a very long period of time if any lesion cells remained untreated. These cannot be seen with the naked eye. However, you can have the area treated again should this happen.

Am I a candidate for Cryotherapy?

If you have any conditions, or take medication, you must speak to the clinician to check suitability prior to booking your appointment. If you take antihistamines on a regular basis, you must stop taking them 2 weeks either side of your treatments.
