Tattoo Removal
Tattoo removal is the process in which a laser is used to break down pigment from any area on the body and face. In the clinic, we use the All White Q-Switched NDYag laser that can target dark and colourful tattoos, as well as semi-permanent makeup. When the light is released from the handle piece, it creates a sound shockwave that upon impact with the skin, shatters the ink into smaller particles, which are naturally cleared away by white blood cells over the course of 1-2 weeks. This results in the gradual fading of the tattoo.
What should I expect from the treatment?
During treatment, you may feel a rubber band snapping effect on the skin with some heat which can be uncomfortable. We recommend purchasing a numbing cream to be applied on before your treatment. After the treatment is performed, you may notice an immediate frosting effect due to gas bubbles formation on the skin surface. This effect fades around 20 - 60 mins post treatment. There may be some bleeding, swelling, and redness following this, which is expected and completely normal. Please note, during brow tattoo removal, or if the treatment is over an area with hair, your hairs will turn white. This is temporary and will resolve in around a month. Your brow hairs may also grow slower for up to 12 weeks. All of this will return to normal as well.
Am I a candidate for this treatment?
This will be determined by the specialist during consultation where a patch test is performed. As inks behave differently, your results may differ too. Pregnant and breastfeeding clients cannot have this treatment. If you take medication or have any conditions, always check with the laser technician.
How many sessions will it take?
We recommend around 4-6 sessions for a good result; however, this will depend on the ink type, location and depth of placement. In SPMU removal, usually 1 session is enough, however in some cases you may need 2. The typical waiting time between treatments is 6 weeks.
Are there any side effects?
As tattoo removal is a high impact treatment onto the skin, where multiple treatments need to be performed, it may in some cases leave a mark in the form of hypo pigmentation, and in others, a staining shadow post treatment completion. With SPMU removal, marks are very rare, and more commonly a temporary skin stain which is transient and tends to fade within 6-12 months. You may experience some immediate bleeding, crusting of the area, some bruising and some tenderness in the first week. These can be prevented and alleviated with appropriate aftercare which your technician will explain in-depth at the consultation.
